Nail Bar Ventilation: LEV for Acrylic Dust and Methacrylate Vapour

Nail technicians work all day in a cloud of fine dust and chemical vapour. Filing artificial nails releases acrylic dust. Applying liquid-and-powder and gel systems releases methacrylate vapours. Breathed in day after day, these can cause asthma, skin allergies, and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. The problem is well documented, and the control the HSE expects is local exhaust ventilation at each workstation.

Many salon owners assume an open window or a ceiling fan is enough. It is not. General ventilation dilutes the air in the room but does nothing to capture dust and vapour at the point they are created — right in front of the technician's face. Controlling exposure means extraction at source.

Why Nail Products Are a Health Hazard

The HSE's guidance for beauticians identifies the main hazards in nail work:

  • Acrylic dust. Filing and shaping artificial nails produces fine dust that can cause wheezing, chest tightness and asthma when inhaled regularly.
  • Methacrylate vapours. Liquid-and-powder acrylic systems and some gels release methacrylate vapours that can cause asthma and skin sensitisation. Once a technician is sensitised, even small exposures can trigger a reaction.
  • Solvents. Products containing solvents such as acetone can cause headaches, dizziness and irritation, and must be kept lidded when not in use.

These are not one-off risks. A nail technician performs the same dust-and-vapour-generating tasks all day, every working day. That cumulative exposure is what drives the health risk — and what the controls are designed to prevent.

Why Source-Capture LEV Is the Answer

Preventing exposure means keeping the workplace well ventilated — but general room ventilation alone does not control exposure at the workstation. The HSE recommends an extractor hood or a downdraught table for nail work: local exhaust ventilation that captures dust and vapour at source, right next to where the technician is working, before it reaches their breathing zone.

A downdraught table draws air down through the work surface, pulling dust and vapour away from the technician and the client. A captor hood or extraction point positioned close to the hands does the same by drawing contaminated air away at source. The key is proximity — extraction only works if it is close to where the dust and vapour are created.

The HSE publishes specific guidance for nail bars in its COSHH essentials series (sheet SR13), which sets out the source-capture approach for the trade.

A Nail Bar Extraction System Is a COSHH LEV System

A downdraught table or extractor hood used to control acrylic dust and methacrylate vapour is local exhaust ventilation, and it controls a substance hazardous to health. That brings it within COSHH and the full set of LEV duties. The system must be:

  • Suitable — sized and positioned to capture dust and vapour at each workstation in use
  • Used correctly — switched on and working whenever dust- or vapour-generating tasks are done
  • Maintained — filters changed on schedule, airflow kept up, capture points kept close to the work
  • Thoroughly examined and tested — at least once every 14 months under COSHH Regulation 9

It is easy to overlook this in a small salon where the extraction is a neat table rather than industrial ductwork. But the legal duties are the same. If the table or hood is there to control a health hazard, it is LEV.

Thorough Examination and Testing for Salon LEV

COSHH Regulation 9 requires LEV to be thoroughly examined and tested at least every 14 months, with records kept for at least five years. Nail bar extraction used routinely to control dust and vapour falls within this requirement.

The thorough examination checks that the extraction is still capturing dust and vapour effectively — measuring airflow and checking the capture device — not just that the fan switches on. Between formal tests, carry out and record simple user checks: is the airflow adequate, is the filter due for replacement, is the capture point still positioned close to the work.

What an Inspection Will Check

Nail bars and beauty salons can be visited by HSE inspectors or by environmental health officers from the local council. They will look at how dust and vapour exposure is controlled.

A visit will typically check:

  • Whether a risk assessment identifies the dust- and vapour-generating tasks and the controls needed
  • Whether source-capture extraction — a downdraught table or extractor hood — is provided at each workstation
  • Whether the extraction is switched on and used during nail work
  • Whether the LEV has a current TExT report within the 14-month window
  • Whether records of testing, maintenance and user checks are available
  • Whether products containing solvents are stored correctly and kept lidded
  • Whether technicians are trained on the risks and the correct use of extraction

Practical Compliance Steps

1. Provide source-capture extraction at every workstation. A downdraught table or extractor hood for each technician doing acrylic and gel work — not just general room ventilation.

2. Use it every time. Extraction only protects when it is switched on and positioned close to the work. Make this routine.

3. Bring the extraction into the TExT regime. Each table or hood needs thorough examination and testing within 14 months. Use the LEV compliance checklist generator to assess your setup.

4. Keep products lidded and stored. Solvent-based products must be kept closed when not in use to reduce vapour.

5. Maintain filters and airflow. A loaded filter or weak airflow means the extraction is no longer controlling exposure. Build checks into routine use.

7. Train your technicians. Everyone doing nail work should understand the health risks and why extraction matters.
